5 things meme

2 posts in as many days…. It must be deadline season

Anyway, Meri has tagged me with this meme, and it’d be rude not to. Given that both my wife and my brother read my blog finding things might be tricky.

Five things you might not know about me:

  1. I used to play the oboe. I started when I was 11 and gave up when I went to university and stopped finding the time. I haven’t played in about 5 years now, so probably wouldn’t get a note out of one any more.
  2. I’m a registered Brownie Guider. I’m not currently attached to pack tho.
  3. I didn’t need glasses until I was 16.
  4. I’ve been dying my hair for so many years I don’t know what colour it is naturally any more.
  5. My favourite dessert is Summer Pudding

I’m meant to tag 5 people, but I can’t be bothered – if you want to do this meme, consider yourself tagged.

Where Was I?

Well, Meri tagged me with this particular meme a fortnight ago, so I figured I should probably get around to completing it.

1 year ago I was still living in Bath although Meri & I were planning to move to Newcastle by then. I’d graduated 6months previously and was working in an Architecture practice in Bristol – which meant I had a 1hour+ commute each way involving 2 buses, a train and, invariably, Greggs bakery.

I’d probably applied to the University of Newcastle to do my Masters degree, but hadn’t been given an interview date yet.

I’d just started my 3rd term of my 1st year at the Univeristy of Bath. Following a nasty breakup shortly after Christmas I had dyed my hair blonde and was involved in a number of theatre productions (acting, producing, and painting sets) and had pretty much given up on doing any Uni work or sleeping to make time for them. I think I got 1% over the pass mark for that term after having a minor breakdown in one of my tutor’s offices. I gained a lot of worried friends tho.

I was 14. I was in Year 9 at Chesterton Community College. I’d probably just been made prefect – which meant I got to spend half an hour a day sat outside senior staff offices, instead of getting bullied in afternoon registration. Bonus.

I was still playing oboe (probably at Grade 4 standard at this point) and had started playing in the junior county orchestra on a Wednesday evening, where I made a whole bunch of new friends.

So Who Am I Tagging?

Meri passed me a musical baton… I was reading a whole load of these yesterday and wondering if I’d get it.. and now I have!!!

Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me:

I”m going for the meaning rather than the listen to a lot… some of them I do listen to a lot, but at least one means sufficient that I can’t listen to it any more…

  • ?All Star? ? Smash Mouth
  • ?Kryptonite? ? 3 Doors Down

Where Have You Been?

World Travel Map for Elly Thompson

I decided to make one of these map thingies after seeing the one Meri had put up on her blog. Apart from the fact that most of my travelling is confined to Europe (something I hope to rectify) it also struck me that the way some countries were represented was a little (for want of a better word) unrepresentative.

For example, There are many countries in the world which you can fit most of Europe into. If I had managed to visit the US at anytime (eveny just one city) then the whole of the US would be highlighted including Alaska. This would have more than doubled the amount of red on the map, without me doing twice the amount of travelling I had done within Europe.

At first I considered that doing it on the basis of “States Vistied” (or territories or provinces or whatever for different countries) might be better, although it occured to me that this is not necessarily representative either (compare the size of New York State to Texas?) so maybe by timezone would be a better idea.

Anyway, it’s not like I’m going to do anything about it, it’s just another of those pipe dreams I keep having.
