A thought that occurred to me while wandering around the technology section of a bookshop…
A book on CSS/HTML/XHTML/other-web-design that doesn’t mention web standards is like a book titled “DIY Loft Insulation” where the first chapter is all about asbestos.

Yeah, I agree entirely. I remember looking to see if I could find a book on basic web design for my brother. The trouble is, the kind of “first timer’s” books tend to be a bit older and often utterly non standard.
Book’s like Zeldman’s and Dan Cederholm’s are great, but I’m not really convinced that they’d do very much for anyone that didn’t already know how to build some kind of web site. HTML Dog is a good resource for learning, maybe Patrick Griffiths should do a book, if he’s not already.
