In Short…
Monday, 21st March 2005
There are a growing number of things which we don’t refer to in full. From everyday things like TV and PC to shortened expressions like LOL and (the infuriating)IMHO. And that’s before we start on the multitude of web based acronyms (CSS, XHTML, DOM, etc, etc)
What’s my point? Well other than I’ve just proved that I can write a post which contains more markup than content, in order to not confuse too many people I may have to learn to spell “acronym”
Ben:
I wouldn’t worry about spelling acronym, the HTML Working Group (and the WHATWG) are planning to drop it in XHTML2 and just specify the more generic
abbrelement.Off top of my head (which is never a good place at the best of times) I think that only one of the above was actually an acronym rather than abbreviation since HTML isn’t (apparently, I think I agreed with evolt last time I read it).

Elly:
That depends on how you pronounce LOL and IMHO (some people separate the letters some don’t), but I get your point. However initialism isn’t a commonly used description, nor a valid (X)HTML element, and until the acronym element is dropped, it appears to be the most relevant.

Ben Ward:
I agree it’s a bit of a grey area. I tend to use
abbrmore, personally, though I will (when my mind is feeling up to it) useacronymas appropriate. I think (especially given that the element will be deprecated) that it ultimately doesn’t matter. Both tags perform the near identical function.Out of curiousity, how do you pronounce IMHO as a word? I’d never really considered that you could… “I·mo”?

im-ho
Now try ROTFLMAO
Something along the lines of rot-full-mow, or maybe rot-full-mayo…..

How about FAQ? Is it “eff-ay-queue” or just “fack”?

Ben Ward:
If I were reading it in my head it seems that I read ‘fack’, if I were asking someone else to read a FAQ though, I’d spell it out.
