Thank You For Making a Simple Litter Bin Very Happy
Monday, 24th November 2003
They’re making talking bins to help combat the litter problem in Berlin.
“We want to encourage people in a nice, funny way to throw their trash in the baskets and not on the street”
As The Register nicely points out, the chances of this working in England are quite slim due to gangs of marauding school children – but if it works in Germany, that’s fantastic…..if a little like something out of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
Andrew:
What I think would be really useful would be bins, and other such “civic amenities”, that could fight back. Or at least make it legal to lay into “gangs of baseball-bat wielding teen ne’er-do-wells” with our own weapons of choice.
Give a bin an uzi, or a post box a chainsaw, and see how long the problem persists.
A bit radical I know, but…

I’m not sure the Register doesn’t think it’s April 1st today (see BathGeeks).
Also, Berlin is actually an extremely clean city, especially for its size and population.
Ho hum.

Tony:
Does anyone have a link to the blue fly urinals? That was an excellent example of encouraging clenliness that would work in england.
How would you do it with bins though?

I think Simon might have it … I remember he was the one that told us about it
