And from the Other Side

It appears that while the makers of computer games are opting for a more “hand drawn” aesthetic, Disney, the pioneers of the full length feature cartoon are opting for computer generated characters (Link from Boing Boing)
It’s hardly suprising that computer generated characters are going to be far more commonplace (especially now there are Oscar and MTV award categories for them) but that doesn’t mean hand drawn doesn’t have a place in the industry and it would be a pity to see them go.
Incidentally here is Gollum’s MTV Award Acceptance Speech(Quicktime). It’s highly amusing. Apparently there’s a Yoda one out there somewhere too but I haven’t seen it and can’t seem to find it.
Continuing on the theme of computer graphics, here’s a link Shevek sent me. The Internet RayTracing Competition. Shiny….. I need enough time to do this sort of thing……

The Cell shading style has been around a little while now. I believe the first game was Jet Set Radio, though I’m pretty sure there must be a couple of unrecognised groundbreakers to do it in some extent before that.
I get the feeling that Cell Shading is the trick everyone in the industry will want to try and milk. In a minute it will be overused and tired…
Its curious how comic book style in games is becoming big about the time that the movie industry is trudging their way through all the superhero characters… Spiderman, Hulk, Daredevil, Xmen… Fantastic 4 are next on the cards I believe…
BTW… Why does your text highlight backwards? I find it very disconverting, as I highlight text as I read it…

And now that I remember, how can I not mention the glorious Cell shading that is Zelda GC?

The games you mention aren’t really what I was getting at – ie they don’t look like someone drew them in pen and then coloured them in….
And no, I wouldn’t be suprised if people starting picking up on cell shading either – and as you rightly say, nothing stays new for long.
Yes, there are a lot of superheros in the movies at the moment…. not to mention graphic novels….lets see, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (which they WRECKED!), Hell Boy is coming up soon, and lets think of another one…. The Matrix. I’m sure there are others too.
I’m not quite sure what you mean by the highlighting thing and so don’t know why it does it or if I can stop it…. *ponders*

Aye, from what I’ve seen of it XIII is a little special, but still, Its a variation on the theme that is “the comic book look”
Try and highlight some text on your screen using IE… Not in a comments box. That works fine.
